My cousin Jill turned me onto a great blog called thrifty chicks. They have a great way of putting a positive, eco-friendly spin on shopping at thrift stores, and offer the kind of reassurance some people need to get themselves inside a thrift store. As for me, I've enjoyed them for years and reading this blog just made me feel smart.
I recommend it to those of you who need a little encouragement to step out of your normal routine and go to a smelly junk store. I won't lie to you, in my years of scouring thrift stores, I've never hit the jackpot in a fiscal sense (as in paid 50 cents for something worth far more), but I have managed to haul home a few treasures:
:: Mark Bittman's 'How to Cook Everything' cookbook. Brand new. One of my favorites.
:: 2 fabulous and huge gold frames.
:: Bright colored pumps. Resulted in a huge trend that spread throughout Provo.
:: Old books that I have cut up and used for lots of projects (cards, decoupage notebooks)
and, found by Dave
:: Ceramic turkey, very lifelike, just in time for thanksgiving. He painted it all white, and it is very attractive.
I could go on, but the point I want to make is that, it's so fun to get something great for such a steal.
The thrifty chicks also made a point to talk about giving thrifted items. At first this made me think twice. But as they said, and I have come to conclude, doesn't this really show how much thought you've put into something?
For example, say you have someone on your gift list that collects copper pots, molds, etc. Throughout the year as I'm browsing I can watch for those kind of items, and at the end of the year, have some pretty great stuff that took a lot more thought than a last minute trip to the mall.
I have found some fine pieces of furniture at DI. Some I even hauled to Texas...but most back to DI. I love a good treasure find!
